🚀 Getting Started

Welcome! If you've ever applied for a job online and wondered why you never heard back, this tool is for you. ats-resume-scorer is a free application that reads your resume, reads a job description you paste in, and tells you exactly how well you match—before you hit submit. It uses smart AI technology to find missing skills, formatting issues, and other problems that automated hiring systems (called ATS) might reject your resume for.

🧐 What Does This App Do for You?

Think of ats-resume-scorer as your personal career coach that never sleeps. You paste a job description into the app, upload your resume (PDF or Word), and the AI does the rest. Here's exactly what you get back in seconds:

  • ATS Compatibility Score – A percentage from 0 to 100 showing how likely a robot will read your resume correctly. Low scores mean your layout might confuse parsers.

  • Skills Validation – The app compares every skill mentioned in the job posting against your resumeand flags which ones are missing or underemphasized.

  • Keyword Gap Analysis – It shows you the exact phrases and buzzwords recruiters look for that you haven't included yet–so you can tailor your resume for each specific job quickly.

  • Plain-Language Recommendations – No techspeak. You get simple advice like "Add 'project management' near the top of your experience section" or "Your resume layout uses two columns, which confuses many ATS systems–switch to a single column"."

Mac and Linux users: a web version is coming soon–for now, this Windows build is your best bet.‎

📥 Download & Installation (Windows)

Follow these exact steps–you'll be up and running in under three minutes.

Step 1: Get the File

Click here to visit the download page

This link takes you tothe official releases page for this project. You'll see a list of version numbers (like v1.2.3)–always choose the newest one at the top.

.

Step 2: Pick the Right Download

On that page, you'll see several files attached to the newest release. Look for the file named:

ats-resume-scorer-windows.zip

If you see multiple .zip files and one says "source code"–ignore those. You want the one that says windows in its name.‎

Step 3: Extract the Zip File

  1. Right-click the downloaded .zip file in your Downloads folder.

  2. Select "Extract All..." from the menu. .

  3. A window pops up–click the "Extract" button at the bottom right. .

  4. Windows will create a new folder called ats-resume-scorer-windows next editor to the zip file. Open that folder.

Step 4: Launch the Application

Inside the extracted folder, you will see a file called ats_resume_scorer.exe (or simply ats-resume-scorer with an app icon)‎. Double-click it to launch. That's it–no installation wizard, no registry changes, nothing else to configure.

Step 5: First-Time Setup Notes

  • The first launch might take 10-15 seconds longer as it prepares its AI models. Be patient–a loading screen will appear.‎

  • If Windows SmartScreen shows a blue warning saying "Windows protected your PC"–this is common for new indie apps. Click "More info" the → "Run anyway". The app is scanned and safe–the warning just happens because it's not a well-known publisher yet.

🖥️ How to Use the Application (60-Second Walkthrough)

  1. Open the app – You'll see a clean window with two main panels: "Upload Resume" and "Job Description".

  2. Upload your resume – Click the "Browse" button and select your resume file (.pdf or .docx work best). If your resume is in Google Docs, export it as a PDF first. .

  3. Paste the job description – Copy the full text of the job ad from LinkedIn, Indeed, or any job board. Paste it into the text box provided‎. The more complete the text, the more accurate the score. .

  4. Click "Analyze" – The big green button at the bottom. Watch the progress bar fill as the AI processes both documents. .

  5. Read your results – Your screen refreshes with three things:

    • A big circular score gauge (78%, for example)
    • A color-coded list of matched skills (greenmake
    • A list of missing or weak skills (red) with suggestions for rewording parts of your resume to cover them

🔍 Understanding Your Score

Score Range Meaning What to Do
80–100% Excellent match–you're ready to apply Submit as-is, maybe tiny tweaks suggested
60–79% Good–but some gaps Add the missing keywords shown in red
40–59% Average–you'd likely be filtered out Rework your resume using the suggestions
0–39% Poor match Use the recommendations to rebuild sections of your resume before applying

💡 Pro Tips for Best Results

  • Run every resume against 2-3 different job descriptions before you start applying. Patterns will emerge–you'll see the same skills missing over again, and you can fix those on your master template.‎

  • Don't lie–rephrase. The app doesn't tell you to fabricate experience. It shows you phrases from the job ad that you can legitimately work into your real experience bullets. For example, if "stakeholder communication" is flagged missing and you've actually emailed clients monthly–reword that bullet to say "Provided regular stakeholder communication via status reports". That's honest tailoring, not lying.‎

  • Format matters more than content for the score. If your score is low but you know you're qualified, the layout is probably the culprit. One-column, standard fonts (Arial, Calibri, Georgia), no tables, no graphics–that's what the ATS robots digest best. The app will tell you exactly what's wrong.‎

🛠️ Troubleshooting & FAQ

❓ The app won't open after double-clicking

Make sure you extracted the zip first–the app won't run from inside a compressed folder. Also, check that your Windows is 64-bit (Settings → System → About→ look for "64-bit operating system"). If unsure, try right-clicking the .exe → "Run as administrator".

❓ My resume parsed with garbled text

Your PDF might use unusual fonts or embedded images. Convert your resume to .docx and try again. The app recommends .docx as the most reliable format.

.

❓ I get an error saying "API connection failed"

The AI features require a stable internet connection. Check your Wi-Fi–or if you're using VPN, try disconnecting it temporarily. If the issue persists, wait 10 minutes and retry–the free AI servers occasionally rate-limit bursts of usage.

.

❓ How is my data handled?

All analysis happens in real-time without storing your resume permanently. Your files are processed in memory, sent over a secure (HTTPS) connection tothe AI engine, which returns scores immediately. We do not train models on your resumes, and you can delete the app anytime–nothing lingers on your machine.

❓ Is there a fee?

No–this is open-source software, free for anyone to use forever. The AI processing costs are covered by community donations and sponsorship. If you find it useful, consider starring the repository on GitHub to help visibility.‎

📊 What Makes This Different from Other Resume Checkers?

Most free online resume checkers only look for keywords–they're glorified "find and replace" tools. This app uses three layers of intelligence:

  • NLP (Natural Language Processing) – Actually understands sentence context, not just matching strings. It recognizes that "led a team of 5" means leadership, even if the word "leadership" never appears.‎
  • Sentence Transformers – Popularly called "AI embeddings", this maps meaning–it catches synonyms and reworded phrasesautomatically. If the job says "collaborated cross-functionally" and your resume says "worked with multiple departments", the AI recognizes those as the same skill.‎
  • LLM (Large Language Model) Analysis – The System produces human-readable, tailored advice, not generic tips. Each recommendation is specific to your resume's actual wording–like having a professional resume writer look over your shoulder.‎

Help another job seeker avoid the dreaded auto-reject. If you found value here, share this page with a friend who's job hunting. And if you're a developer, the code is open source–you can inspect how the scoring works, contribute improvements, or fork it for your own career site. The entire technology stack is built with modern tools: FastAPI for speed, Streamlit for the user interface, Groq for for ultrafast AI inference, and Supabase for secure backend storage. It's a showcase of practical machine learning–nota toy, buta real, working product you can use today.
