Install RouterChat

You will need an OpenRouter API key or an Anthropic API key.

macOS (Apple Silicon or Intel) (inspect installer)

Setup: The setup guide covers starting, updating, repairing, and data locations. The developer guide covers building from source.

Uninstall: On macOS, double-click Uninstall RouterChat.command in the RouterChat folder on your Desktop. On Windows, open Uninstall RouterChat from the Start Menu. It can save your database to Downloads before removing the app.

Warning

Tested on macOS Apple Silicon and on Windows 11. macOS Intel has not been tested yet.

Features

Chat Mode: Chat with any OpenRouter or Anthropic model. Attach files, search the web, and organize chats with folders, pins, and search.
Writing Mode: Write stories chapter by chapter, brainstorm ideas on a canvas, and keep a lorebook that remembers your characters and world.
Voice input: Talk instead of typing in Chat, Write, and Brainstorm.
Usage tracking: See what you spend, per model and over time.
Local and private: No account, no analytics, no tracking. Your chats and keys never leave your computer except to reach your provider.

Roadmap

The top priority right now is support for more API providers. Anthropic is added, and these are next:

OpenAI: Use OAI models with your OpenAI key.
Local models: Use models on your own computer through apps like Ollama and LM Studio.

Local data

Your chats, settings, and API keys stay on your computer, and the project author never receives them. Packaged installs keep your keys and database outside the app folder, so updates don't replace them. Git clone installs keep using .env and data/routerchat.sqlite3 inside the repository.

When you send a prompt or attachment, that data goes to the provider you picked, OpenRouter or Anthropic, so it can handle the request. Voice recordings always go to OpenRouter. See the privacy page for the full list of connections.
