正文

Nexus Memory

Your agents forget. Your context gets lost. Your setup knowledge is scattered across chats, tools and repos.

Nexus Memory gives every agent one persistent, self-hosted memory they all share.

Hermes • OpenClaw • Claude Code • Codex • Cursor • Cline • Roo Code • GitHub Copilot • Pi • Continue • Odysseus • Kilo Code …and more!

Why not just use a CLAUDE.md?

Every agent community runs into the same wall: the notes file. It works — until it doesn't.

  • A notes file forgets. You write it by hand, your agent reads it only in that one project, and it grows until nobody reads it. No search, no priority, no memory of where a fact came from.
  • Nexus remembers on its own. Facts are stored as they come up — no "remember this" required — and recalled automatically in the next session. Across every project, every agent, one shared brain.
  • The honest bottom line: For one small project, a text file is fine. It gets serious when you run multiple agents across weeks of context — that's when you want a memory, not a sticky note.

Stars License Python 3.11+ Qdrant Version Tests MCP

🤖 Bot Self-Install: Tell your agent: "Read AGENTS.md and install Nexus Memory." It does the rest.

Architecture: Three Paths, One Brain

Nexus Memory offers three integration paths: Native Plugin (automatic memory), MCP Server (manual tools), and Serve Daemon (standalone HTTP). All three read and write the same Qdrant collection: same vectors, same metadata, same access levels.

Key insight: A memory stored by Hermes via the native plugin is immediately visible to OpenClaw via its plugin and to Claude Code via MCP, and vice versa. One brain, many agents.

Path Best for Setup Memory mode
Native Plugin Hermes Agent, OpenClaw, Claude Code ./scripts/install_hermes_plugin.sh, install_openclaw_plugin.sh, or install_claude_plugin.sh Automatic: auto-recall + auto-capture + guardrails, no manual tool calls
MCP Server Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, any MCP agent nexus-memory (stdio) Manual: the agent calls recall / remember explicitly
Serve Daemon Any agent, always-on nexus-memory serve (HTTP, default since v0.21.0) Automatic + stays up when no agent runs

Standalone Serve (daemon mode)

nexus-memory serve                      # Streamable HTTP on 127.0.0.1:9122
curl http://127.0.0.1:9122/healthz      # → {"status":"ok","qdrant":true,...}
  • Additive, not a replacement: stdio and both native plugins work exactly as before.
  • Installed as an OS service (scripts/install_serve.sh): launchd / systemd user unit / Windows scheduled task, idempotent, and re-asserted on every update (fail-open — a failed install never breaks stdio or the plugins).
  • Self-healing: with RunAtLoad + KeepAlive it survives reboots and crashes.
  • Consolidation leader election: when several instances run (daemon + agent), an advisory flock elects one leader — the consolidation daemon runs once, followers take over on failover.
  • Existing installs are not migrated or reconfigured — the service install is safe to re-run.

🤖 Quick Start

Tell your agent to install it

Send this prompt to any MCP-compatible agent:

Read https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Neboy72/nexus-memory/main/AGENTS.md and follow the installation instructions.

Your agent checks the prerequisites (including Qdrant), installs everything, configures the provider and verifies — zero manual steps.

Prerequisite: Qdrant (required)

Nexus stores all memories in Qdrant — a local vector database. It must be running before the server starts.

docker run -d -p 6333:6333 -v qdrant_data:/qdrant/storage --name qdrant qdrant/qdrant

No Docker? Official Qdrant install, on macOS via Homebrew:

brew install qdrant
QDRANT__SERVICE__HTTP_PORT=6333 QDRANT__STORAGE__STORAGE_PATH=$HOME/qdrant-storage qdrant

(The brew binary is configured via environment variables, not CLI flags.) Or point Nexus at any existing Qdrant with NEXUS_QDRANT_HOST + NEXUS_QDRANT_PORT. Verify with curl http://localhost:6333/healthz.

Install

# Requires Python 3.11+ (check: python3 --version — macOS ships 3.9!)
git clone https://github.com/Neboy72/nexus-memory.git ~/nexus-memory
cd ~/nexus-memory
python3 -m venv venv && source venv/bin/activate
pip install -e .
./scripts/install_hermes_plugin.sh     # or: install_openclaw_plugin.sh
nexus-memory                           # or: nexus-memory serve (daemon), nexus-memory webui

The installer builds the plugin's own venv for you. Hermes runs Nexus as a memory provider, and only Hermes' plugin manager reads pip_dependencies from plugin.yaml — the provider path does not. So the installer creates ~/.nexus-memory/plugin-venv and installs the runtime dependencies there. The plugin adds that venv to its own import path at startup, which is why nothing is ever written into Hermes' interpreter (it may be pipx- or system-managed and read-only).

If a dependency ever goes missing anyway, the plugin heals itself: the "missing package" verdict expires (default 60 s), the next probe retries the import, and the running process recovers without a restart. The repair command in the warning text targets the plugin venv, never your Hermes install.

🛠️ Embedding Provider (default: local, no key, no extra software)

The default is local — and it works on a machine with nothing installed. Nexus embeds locally through HuggingFace: sentence-transformers ships as a normal dependency and downloads Qwen/Qwen3-Embedding-0.6B (~600 MB, cached after the first use) — 1024d, multilingual. Nothing leaves your machine, no account, no API key. Ollama is not required.

  • Ollama is not part of the automatic path. It is extra software that not every machine has, so the automatic path never depends on it. If you run Ollama and want to use it, choose it explicitly: NEXUS_EMBEDDING_PROVIDER=ollama (then ollama pull qwen3-embedding:0.6b).
  • A cloud provider (Voyage, OpenAI, Google, Jina) is only used when you name it explicitly — NEXUS_EMBEDDING_PROVIDER=<name> plus its key. A key alone is not enough, and there is no silent cloud fallback.
  • Not sure? python3 -m nexus_memory.wizard scans your machine, lists every provider with its status and recommends one.

The two plugins that talk to Qdrant directly — Claude Code and OpenClaw — ask the local service for their vectors (POST /embed on nexus-memory serve), so they embed with the same model as everything else: local HuggingFace, nothing to install. If you want a different provider, name it explicitly (NEXUS_EMBEDDING_PROVIDER=ollama|voyage|openai|google|jina).

→ Full provider table: 🧩 Embedding Providers.

Upgrading an existing installation

Since the collection model moved into Qdrant as a named vector, a collection created by an older version is unnamed, and the engine cannot tell which model built it — same dimension, different model is invisible to Qdrant. Rather than guess (which would silently mix two vector spaces), the engine stops with a clear error and asks who BUILT the collection.

python3 scripts/detect-legacy-collection.py

It reads your collection, works out the vector size, prints the exact legacy_collections entry to paste into ~/.hermes/nexus/config.json, and does nothing else. An empty collection needs no entry (it is recreated correctly on the next start), and neither does one that is already named — the tool says so in both cases.

{ "legacy_collections": { "nexus": "voyage__voyage-4__1024" } }

The value is the builder (<backend>__<model>__<dim>), never the model you wish to use from now on.

🌐 Web Dashboard (optional)

nexus-memory webui        # → http://127.0.0.1:9121

Connected agents, memory graph with filters, inspector for every memory, drift status. From a repo checkout: python3 dashboard/server.py --port 9121. (The legacy graph-only webui/ UI was removed in v0.18.7.)

🔌 Platform Configuration

Every MCP-compatible agent uses the same stdio config — only the file differs:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "nexus": { "command": "python3", "args": ["-m", "nexus_memory.mcp_server"] }
  }
}
Agent Config file
Hermes Agent ~/.hermes/config.yaml → mcp_servers: {nexus: {command: nexus-memory}} , then hermes gateway restart
OpenClaw ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json → mcp.servers.nexus-memory (nested under env)
Claude Code ~/.claude/settings.json or .mcp.json
Codex CLI ~/.codex/config.toml → [mcp_servers.nexus]
GitHub Copilot (VS Code) .vscode/mcp.json
Cursor Settings → Features → MCP Servers → Add: name nexus, command python3, args -m nexus_memory.mcp_server
Cline / Roo Code · Kilo Code · Pi · Continue.dev · Odysseus same JSON as above, in the agent's own MCP config

Memory Categories

category is required on remember; the server applies "fact" as a backward-compatible default if a client omits it or sends an unknown value.

Category Scope Use case
fact ✅ Permanent Verified facts, decisions (default)
belief 🤔 Drift-prone Assumptions that may change over time
session 🔄 Ephemeral Current conversation context
rule 📏 Permanent Operating rules, policies
preference ❤️ Permanent User likes, dislikes, habits
procedure 🔧 Permanent Workflow steps, how-to sequences
temp ⏳ Temporary Short-lived notes, TTL-managed

Access Levels

Level Visible to Example
🟢 public All agents Project knowledge, technical info
🟡 trusted Approved agents only Personal preferences, habits
🔴 private Owner only Financial data, medical notes, bills

Enforced at the MCP tool level. (Store real credentials in a secret manager, not in memory.) A missing or unknown level is always read as the most restrictive one, never as public.

✨ What it does

Auto-recall & auto-capture 🔄 — The native plugins inject relevant memories before every turn and extract new facts after every turn; the MCP server offers the same as explicit recall / remember. The injected block is capped at NEXUS_PREFETCH_CHARS (default 2400, ~600 tokens, up to 10 hits). That matters: the block is stamped into the turn it arrived on and is replayed with every later turn, so on a metered API you pay for it again on each request. Raise the budget when correct facts get cut off — not when the wrong ones show up (that is a filing problem, not a budget problem). The prefetch is a head start, not a guarantee; an explicit recall is never budget-capped.

Retrieval 🛡️ — Hybrid search blends BM25 + vector + Reciprocal Rank Fusion, so adversarial text that ranks high semantically but contains garbage cannot take over. An optional cross-encoder rerank (Voyage API when a key is set, free local model otherwise; nexus-memory.rerank: true) puts the best candidates in the right order. Sloppy queries are rewritten into concrete search terms before embedding (v0.19.0, hit rate 67% → 75% on live data, fail-open in every failure mode, NEXUS_REWRITE=0 as an emergency brake).

Quality gates 🚪 — The quality of recall is decided at ingestion: only what the user actually said becomes a durable fact about them, task state that expires in a conversation or two is never stored, a passing remark is capped so it decays, and text that looks like an embedded instruction is stored but flagged and demoted below the recall threshold. Poisoned entries can never outrank genuine rules.

Memory dynamics 🧠 — Ranking is brain-inspired: every recall hit reinforces a memory (log-capped, max ×4), unused memories lose 5% of ranking weight per month down to a floor of 30% (forgotten ≠ deleted), and salience (0.0–1.0, ≥ 0.8 is decay-immune) marks what matters. Dynamics act only as a tie-breaker inside equal semantic relevance — they never override the reranker.

Retention & drift 🧹 — Per-category TTLs purge stale entries during SICA runs (temp = 1 day, session = 7 days by default); everything else stays forever. Drift detection scores stale entries and old patterns 0–10 (🟢 < 1 healthy, 🟡 1–3 attention, 🔴 > 3 action).

Knowledge graph 🔗 — Entities and 11 typed relations live alongside the vectors (category="entity"), so the agent can ask "what connects to X?" instead of only "what is similar" — and auto-recall fetches 1-hop neighbours of the top hits, tagged [graph:<relation>], all three plugins, access-level filtered, capped at 5. Relations between facts are discovered automatically (no manual edges), with hub scores, isolation scores and knowledge gaps on top.

Consolidation 🧬 — A background daemon (part of the server, no cron) distills raw conversation dumps into atomic, self-contained facts with resolved pronouns and anchored dates, and resolves contradictions at write time (supersede, never delete). It hitchhikes on your existing LLM config: cheapest open station first (local Ollama if present, then OpenRouter, then any OpenAI-compatible key), sleeps and retries when all are closed, and a monthly budget cap (NEXUS_FUEL_BUDGET_USD, default $5) protects paid stations. Consolidated facts inherit the source memory's access_level; guardrail-override audit entries are never consolidated.

Fact lifecycle 🧬 — Append-only state machine: pending → canonical | deprecated | rolled_back. Every revision carries fact_id, version_id, content_hash, supersedes and a mandatory decision_event — no silent overwrites, no zombie facts. create_pending() / promote() / deprecate() / rollback() drive it; a reranked update no longer stays findable by its refuted wording.

Active guardrails 🛡️ — The only memory layer that does not just store knowledge but guards it: before a destructive operation (rm -rf, drop, kill -9, recreate_collection, find -delete, git clean -fdx, pip uninstall, dd, …) the guardrail checks Qdrant for stored protection rules and blocks if the target matches. Rules are memory-driven, not hardcoded — storing "never delete ~/that-directory/" registers it. When rules cannot be loaded, destructive checks block (fail closed); when Qdrant itself is unreachable they degrade to allow, so they never block work by accident. Overrides require written reasoning and are kept as private audit memories.

SICA self-improvement 🔄 — Automatic memory hygiene: detects stale temp memories (> 7 days), low-confidence entries (< 0.5) and contradiction groups, deletes what is disposable, and turns the rest into suggestions — duplicate entities become merge reviews (oldest wins, nothing auto-deleted), contradictions become one deterministic insight each. Harness-independent: any plugin can call run_sica(). Skill export turns clustered canonical facts into a ready SKILL.md.

Operations 💾 — Automatic backup every 6 hours (payload + vectors, last 7 kept), a safety backup before every update, update notifications in chat, and a self-report layer that notices a broken agent (missing dependency, silence from a plugin that used to call back) and shouts through a webhook or a macOS notification instead of failing quietly. health and GET /healthz surface the same status.

Token & cost hygiene ⚡ — Repeated queries are served from an embedding cache (L0), prefetch has an env-tunable token budget, and cost-aware routing sends premium categories to high-quality providers and ephemeral ones to local embeddings when both are configured.

📊 vs Other Memory Solutions

Compared on what the memory layer itself does — not on how it is hosted:

Capability Nexus Memory Walrus Memory mem0 Honcho agentmemory
Semantic search ✅ local or cloud ✅ via API ✅ cloud ✅ pgvector ✅ Gemini
Hybrid BM25 + Vector + RRF ✅ ❌ ✅ multi-signal ❌ ❌
Drift detection (scored) ✅ 0–10 ❌ ❌ * ❌ ❌
Anti-poisoning / source tiers ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌

Fact lifecycle (append-only, rollback) ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌
Temporal validity (as_of recall) ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌
Ingestion-time consolidation ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌
Knowledge graph + analytics ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌
Active guardrails (memory-driven) ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌
Memory dynamics (reinforcement/decay) ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌
Native plugins (Hermes, OpenClaw, Claude Code) ✅ all three ❌ OpenClaw OpenClaw Hermes
Any MCP agent ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌ ✅
Self-hosted, no account ✅ ❌ blockchain ❌ cloud ❌ cloud ❌ cloud
Cost free WAL token subscription subscription API costs

*mem0 lists staleness as an "open problem" in their 2026 report but does not ship a solution.

Nexus is not the only memory project — it is the one that keeps everything in one place: hybrid retrieval, provenance, fact lifecycle, temporal validity, consolidation, graph analytics, access control and guardrails, running on your own machine with no account.

🧩 Embedding Providers

One server, several backends, same API. The automatic path is local — HuggingFace, installed with the package (sentence-transformers), model Qwen/Qwen3-Embedding-0.6B, 1024d, ~600 MB on first use. Ollama is not automatic; it is available when chosen explicitly. Cloud providers are only ever used on explicit choice (NEXUS_EMBEDDING_PROVIDER=<name> plus the key).

Provider Type How to enable Dims
HuggingFace 🏠 Local default — nothing to configure (override the model with NEXUS_HF_MODEL, e.g. BAAI/bge-m3) 1024
Local service 🔌 Local what the two direct-Qdrant plugins (Claude Code, OpenClaw) use: POST /embed on nexus-memory serve — same model, no setup 1024
Ollama 🦙 Local NEXUS_EMBEDDING_PROVIDER=ollama + ollama pull qwen3-embedding:0.6b 1024
Voyage ☁️ Cloud NEXUS_EMBEDDING_PROVIDER=voyage + VOYAGE_API_KEY 1024
OpenAI ☁️ Cloud NEXUS_EMBEDDING_PROVIDER=openai + OPENAI_API_KEY 1536
Google / Vertex AI 💚 Cloud NEXUS_EMBEDDING_PROVIDER=google + GOOGLE_API_KEY 768
Jina 💜 Cloud NEXUS_EMBEDDING_PROVIDER=jina + JINA_API_KEY 1024

Whichever you pick, one collection belongs to one model: the engine stores the model's fingerprint with the collection and refuses to mix, because vectors from different models are not comparable.

📋 Requirements

  • Python 3.11+
  • Qdrant v1.12+ on localhost:6333
  • One embedding provider — the default is local, needs no key and no extra software:
  • 🏠 HuggingFace (default): ships with the package, downloads Qwen/Qwen3-Embedding-0.6B on first use (1024d, multilingual, ~600 MB, then cached)
  • 🦙 Ollama (explicit choice only): NEXUS_EMBEDDING_PROVIDER=ollama after ollama pull qwen3-embedding:0.6b (1024d)
  • Cloud instead of local (only when named explicitly, together with its key): Voyage (1024d), OpenAI (1536d), Google/Vertex AI (768d), Jina (1024d)
  • Want to pick interactively? python3 -m nexus_memory.wizard scans your machine and recommends one.
