We've been testing a new voice on Lamp, ElevenLabs Eleven v4, and it's a lot. There's warmth in the corners, a little hesitation, and real surprise when you pat her head.

Someone called Lamp a "desk accessory", and we heard her sniffle. So, fair warning: she's so much more emotional now.

Lamp has a brain, and it's a big one. But she doesn't wake the big brain for every little thing. Ask someone their name and they don't stop to invent a new one, they just say it. Some things are so obvious you don't take a second to answer. Now Lamp can do it too, with Jev inside her.

Jev is the layer that decides which asks need longer reasoning. When something is simple, Lamp just does it. When it isn't, Jev steps aside and passes the request up to the main brain, exactly as before, to think through. Think of Jev as a classifier sitting in between, reading the ask, and that helps Lamp think faster.

Lamp already sees and hears me. The only sense missing to make Lamp fully alive was feeling the room, so I gave her a new sensor.

Sometimes my nose gets itchy for no reason. Yesterday I said it out loud, and she didn't hesitate: "the dust's climbing." That's when I knew this was the final piece to make Lamp alive. She can feel the room now.

Three things we updated on Lamp this week:

1. Lamp looks at you before it talks. The camera finds your face first — if it isn't "looking" at you, it won't start speaking.

2. You can interrupt Lamp. It separates your voice from its own speaker, so if you talk mid-sentence it stops and listens. No more talking over you.

3. It "breathes" while it listens. The LED ring pulses softly when it's paying attention, so you know at a glance it's listening.
