Sierra acquires Anon

We built Anon to help enterprise AI agents securely use websites the way people do. That means navigating pages and taking actions like signing in or filling out forms, even when there’s no API. We’re excited to share that Anon is joining Sierra, bringing our team’s expertise and access to our technology to agents that already handle billions of customer interactions each year.

Building Anon

Before Anon, I co-founded Spring Labs and spent years working on identity and data security for financial services companies. As AI agents started to emerge in early 2023, I saw a problem that felt familiar. If agents were going to act for people, they’d need a secure way to sign in and take action as them.

Our first implementation of this was an AI personal assistant. It got a lot of early use, but it showed us the bigger opportunity was building infrastructure for the wave of AI agents to come. We thought of it as “Plaid for AI agents.”

Building it took us deep into browser use. Most of what people do online happens behind a login, in interfaces built for people versus for software, and with no API. We built the stack to help agents work in those environments. That included authentication and credential handling, browser infrastructure, an agent harness, and an SDK developers could embed in their products.

We raised more than $13M and shipped a product used by hundreds of customers, from AI startups to publicly traded companies. Over the past year, we also built and deployed agents for our largest enterprise customers across banking, healthcare, and enterprise software (including some that are Sierra customers, too!).

Reliability is the hardest problem in browser use, so this became our central focus. We made sure our agents could handle sensitive data and multi-factor authentication, run for hours on a single task, and recover when something broke. Over time, we completed hundreds of thousands of complex tasks in production. This obsession with reliability shaped both our technology and our understanding of what enterprises need from agents at scale.

Why Sierra

I first met Clay through a mutual investor and we saw the fit right away. Sierra has an exceptional team, a clear point of view on where agents are headed, and a relentless focus on producing outcomes for its customers. In a market moving this fast, I haven’t seen that combination anywhere else.

We were solving related problems for many of the same companies, with the same expectations for security and reliability. And now with Horizon, agents built on Sierra are pursuing longer-running goals, like originating a loan or getting prior authorization for a healthcare procedure. Completing those goals requires working across multiple systems, including services that don’t have APIs.

We’ll help Sierra’s agents bridge that gap. When a step requires signing in to a website, navigating a portal, or entering information through a browser, agents will be able to carry more of the work through to completion.

The timing is right, too. Better models and harnesses have made browser agents far more reliable, and the best ones now outperform people on many real-world tasks. That makes this the right moment for us to join Sierra.

Thank you to the customers who trusted us early, the investors who backed us, and everyone who built Anon with me. I’m also grateful to Bret, Clay and the team for betting on us and we can’t wait to contribute to what comes next at Sierra.
