You can run a full data or AI course on the same platform enterprises use in production - for free, with no cloud contract, no license to manage, and nothing to install. Databricks Free Edition is a perpetually free version of the platform; each student signs up individually and works entirely in the browser, so a course can adopt it without provisioning servers or purchasing anything.

Why learn Databricks?

Data and AI skills are moving faster than most curricula can follow, and the demand for these skills is showing up in both hiring and learner behavior. LinkedIn named Databricks one of its Top 10 Skills on the Rise for 2026, while Udemy included Databricks among its 100 Fastest-Growing Global Skills. Two very different signals pointing in the same direction: knowing how to work with modern data and AI platforms is increasingly valuable.

For a student, that can be the difference between “I've studied distributed computing” and “I've built a data pipeline on the platform your team uses.” For an instructor, it means making an existing course more directly connected to how data and AI work gets done in industry, without fully redesigning the curriculum.

The barriers that often make industry platforms difficult to bring into the classroom, including cost, licensing, and IT provisioning, are solved by Databricks Free Edition; a permanently free account with no credit card, no cloud contract, and nothing to install.

That matters because the two usual barriers to teaching with industry tools are cost and setup, and Free Edition removes both. It’s designed specifically for learning and non-commercial use, and is available to students and educators globally.

What is Databricks Free Edition? A no-cost, perpetually free version of the Databricks Data + AI Platform, built for students, hobbyists, and aspiring data and AI professionals. It runs in the browser with no cloud contract and no credit card required to sign up, on smaller compute sizes under fair-use limits. It is not for production or commercial use. Databricks also has deep roots in academia. It was founded by the UC Berkeley professors and PhD students who created Apache Spark™, and open source is still at the center of what we build - Delta Lake, MLflow, and Unity Catalog are developed with global communities under vendor-neutral foundations (the Linux Foundation, LF AI & Data, and the Apache Software Foundation), and Databricks recently open sourced Omnigent, a meta-harness for AI agents. For educators, that means the skills students build are rooted in industry-wide open standards, not a single proprietary tool.

A production platform, not a teaching sandbox

Because Free Edition is the real platform rather than a simplified sandbox, the skills transfer directly. A student who writes a Spark job, runs a SQL query, deploys a model, or builds an agent in Free Edition is using the same tools professionals use in production. There's no "now unlearn the training tool and learn the real one" step later.

Mapping coursework to platform capabilities

One environment can serve as a statistics lab, a database course, a business-analytics class, and an AI capstone - which cuts the number of tools students and instructors have to learn. This table maps common courses to the tools that might fit your current curriculum.

FAQ for instructors

How do I distribute assignments?

Distribute through your existing LMS or a GitHub repository. Export the assignment notebook as an .ipynb file and share it with any datasets or instructions; students import a copy into their Free Edition workspace, complete it, and export the finished notebook for submission. For group assignments, students can share a notebook and collaborate in real time.

How do I distribute large datasets to students?

Three options for datasets too large for GitHub or a local download: (1) host the dataset in cloud storage students connect to; (2) use Open Sharing to share the dataset from your Free Edition workspace directly into each student's workspace; or (3) pick a free dataset from Databricks Marketplace that students access natively inside the platform.

Can I use Databricks for group assignments?

Yes. Databricks is built for collaboration — with real-time co-authoring, comments, and tagging, students can work together and invite you into their notebooks to troubleshoot or give feedback. Databricks Free Edition is designed for up to five people to share an account for a group project. See how to set up collaboration in Databricks Free Edition.

What if students run out of compute during an assignment?

Free Edition runs on smaller compute sizes under fair-use limits. If a workspace exceeds its quota, its compute pauses for the rest of the day and resumes the next day. Hitting a limit mid-assignment is rare and never permanent. Furthermore, you and your students can double your available daily credit up to three times per year, so students can always keep working during crunch periods and exams. The best way to ensure a smooth experience is to test each assignment in Free Edition ahead of time to catch any step that needs significant compute.

Is Free Edition really free, and is it right for a course?

Yes - it's perpetually free, with no cloud contract and no credit card required to sign up. It's built for learning and explicitly not for production or commercial use, which fits a classroom well. Credits reset daily, so students start each day fresh.

How to get started at your university

A good place to start is anywhere you currently use a cloud-based notebook environment. Sign up for Databricks Free Edition yourself and take the Databricks Fundamentals course; once you're comfortable, assign both to your students and see how the self-paced courses fit your existing curriculum.
