Advancing Human-AI Cooperation

Transforming artificial intelligence into an adaptive teammate in dynamic collaboration for personalized care.

Every rehabilitation journey begins with a person. It may be a teenager working to return to the playing field after knee surgery or an older adult taking their first steps following a stroke. While every patient's path is different, they all depend on the expertise of clinicians to help restore mobility, independence and quality of life.

The NSF AI Institute for Human-AI Cooperation (HAIC) promotes national leadership in AI, building a new synergistic framework for the development of robust intelligent agents that users can rely upon in human-centered personalized decision-making. By interpreting multiscale and multimodal data, adapting to individual needs, HAIC is helping make rehabilitation more personalized, effective and responsive.

Led by the University of Delaware and supported by a $21.5 million, five-year award from the U.S. National Science Foundation, HAIC brings together researchers and partners to develop trustworthy AI that strengthens human expertise, shapes the future of rehabilitation and health care, and cultivates the next generation of leaders in AI.

HAIC advances U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence by transforming AI into an adaptive teammate for human-centered personalized decision-making, with compelling impact in dynamic rehabilitation settings to improve patient outcomes.

Transforming AI into an Adaptive Teammate

Health care is dynamic, personal and deeply human. Every patient presents unique needs, and every clinical decision requires expertise, experience and trust. HAIC is transforming artificial intelligence into an adaptive teammate that works alongside clinicians—helping personalize rehabilitation, support decision-making and improve patient outcomes.

By combining advances in artificial intelligence, engineering, robotics, physical therapy, neuroscience and ethics, HAIC is creating trustworthy AI technologies that strengthen human expertise while preparing the next generation of researchers, clinicians and innovators.

PROGRAM IMPACTS

Accelerate AI and scientific research through interdisciplinary collaboration that combines artificial intelligence, engineering, robotics, neuroscience and rehabilitation science.

Develop AI systems and digital twins that help clinicians deliver more personalized, data-informed rehabilitation and health care while keeping people at the center of every decision.

Create educational pathways, research experiences and workforce development programs that prepare students and professionals to lead in AI-enabled health care.

Broaden collaboration among universities, health systems, industry, government agencies, HBCUs, and community colleges to translate discovery and technology into economic and societal impacts.

Advance responsible, transparent and human-centered AI through ethical research, open collaboration and contributions to evidence-based policy.

An AI-enabled system for human-AI cooperation will improve the outcomes of the rehabilitation through the clinician’s enhanced abilities to make sense of a variety of sensors and data and the patients’ ability to interact with AI-enabled devices to support their participation in therapy. A digital twin and simulation environment will provide an avatar in a virtual embodiment for mirroring structural and functional aspects of the AI’s model of a patient.

Better Together:
Human Expertise + Artificial Intelligence

Rehabilitation is dynamic, personal and deeply human. Every patient responds differently to treatment, making clinical decision-making both complex and essential. HAIC is developing adaptive AI that learns from data, responds to changing conditions, and collaborates with clinicians to provide personalized guidance throughout a patient's recovery.

Rather than replacing human expertise, HAIC is creating trustworthy AI that strengthens it—helping clinicians make more informed decisions, improve patient outcomes, and expand access to high-quality rehabilitation.

Every year in the United States, nearly 800,000 people have a stroke, and stroke survivors often experience reduced mobility and increased risk of long-term disabilities. Our researchers are studying how robotic devices can guide personalized rehabilitation strategies for stroke patients.
